Ads , IPL and My Family : CrashThePepsiIpl

Hello Friends,

Most of us are now habituated by the plethora Of Ads being served to us in the break of our favorite entertainment programs on TV. I will agree that some commercials are really entertaining and funny, whilst some appear simply dull and dumb. And there are a few ads which seem unworthy of attention. I love quirky and funny ads, some ads simply make you curious and make you think , give you something to think about. But most of Indian ads are just ‘old wine in a new bottle’ and whereas ‘Old Wine’ gets Costlier with time, Old Ideas seem totally inappropriate in today’s perspective.

Most of the time I watch TV , the little time I get to watch it, I usually have My sister or my Grand Mother for company. Whenever I watch something, be it English Horror or Sci-Fi Series or our Desi version of Sci-Fi CID, I always look out for new Advertisements. Today, companies create really amusing and engaging ads  for its viewers. Advertisements are not done the way they were done a decade back. I still remember those ads which would have musical jingles , rhymes to engage its readers. Today, a 40 second Advertisement can have a dozen changes of scenes, changes of characters and high-end graphics.

I still remember the time a leading telecom company came out with Alien like cartoon creatures for their Ad’s who had a language unfamiliar to the cultured world. The cute characters and animations struck the heart of Millions and people even went on Social media to watch the ads. I still have the theme song by this particular Advertising company and I even kept that as Ringtone for sometime. The funny thing is, My grand mother has a weird sense of Humor. She saw the ad a few times and then one evening while I was humming the tune from the Ad, she promptly said, I know this movie it’s a Romantic Film right?

Then there are those wretched Fairness cream reviews , which are really depressing though they help brands cash in thousands and thousands in sales. Well I’m not saying they should not endorse such things, I know they will , since india generates high revenues from the sales of fairness creams. But, this fairness obsession is what do you say, quite harmful for the society. Whatever the natural skin color , everyone should embrace it . But when celebrities are getting paid crores to promote these creams and fairness products it seems as if our aim in life is to be fair and presentable. In a recent ad , a popular actress is seen promoting a certain fairness cream , and even though she is very fair to begin with , her face is enhanced and her skin is given a whitening effect. when ever the said ads come in she says, ‘These women seem to roll their faces in Flour before coming up, do they put on 3/4 inches of white powder to look this artificial. Guess, the Advertising wing should be made aware of this .
